Background
With the advent of stand-alone AI tools such as ChatGPT and those built into popular writing software such as Microsoft Word and Grammarly, it’s easier than ever for students to outsource their writing. Add online paraphrasing tools and paper mills to the mix and students lacking time, understanding of course materials, or confidence in their writing skills can readily find a way to submit papers they did not write.
When students do not complete writing assignments using their own skills and knowledge, they harm themselves, their classmates, their universities, and ultimately their society.
When plagiarism isn’t intentionally deceptive, it is most often the result of planning and time management failures, an inadequately robust writing process, difficulty understanding readings, and insufficient paraphrasing skills.
This workshop offers an overview of some ways to remedy these problems and offers an invitation to attendees to book writing support and reading support appointments with a professional literacy consultant at UNE’s Student Academic Success Center to further develop their understanding and skills.
