Reverse Planning for a Paper Due in 14 Days

Goal – Write a solid paper (B or better) that improves my understanding of the topic without having to stress or cram.

Deliverable – A 1500-word paper that makes an argument about the topic using at least 3 sources.

Logistics – Draft due – one week before final due date. Revision must be substantial.

Tasks

  • Day 1 Analyze the writing prompt and make a plan – 30-60 minutes
  • Day 1-2 – Find 3 relevant articles that are in conversation with one another.
    • Visit the reference librarian (or use the “Chat with a Librarian” feature of the library website) to find out what databases are the best to search given my topic. 60 minutes for all the work with the librarian
      • Try some searches with the librarian coaching me on my search strategies
      • Work with the librarian to learn how to evaluate the relevance and utility of the articles I’m finding
    • Do more searches and evaluations on my own until I feel confident that I have a set of sources that can be put in conversation with one another.
  • Day 2-3 – Read and annotate the articles – 90-120 minutes
  • Day 3 – Make a synthesis table or idea map to see the conversation – 60 minutes
  • Day 4 – Complete focused free-write activities to make connections among the articles and generate insights. 45-60 minutes
  • Day 5-6 – Write a draft in 2 or 3 70-minute writing sessions. Not sure how to start – read this.
  • Day 6 Assess draft, make additions and subtractions – 45-60 minutes
  • Day 6 – Polish a draft – 30 minutes
  • Day 6 – Convert to pdf and submit draft via Brightspace – 15 minutes
  • Day 8 – Get feedback, assess it, and make a revision plan60 minutes
  • Day 9 Revise – up to 2 70-minute sessions
  • Day 10 – Assess revision – 45-60 minutes
  • Day 11 – Polish – 30 minutes
  • Day 11 – Use RefWorks to finalize references page – 30 minutes – Ask a UNE librarian how to access RefWorks
  • Day 12 – Check manuscript formatting – 30 minutes
  • Day 12 – Convert to pdf and submit draft via Brightspace – 15 minutes
